Many Expressions of Thanks to God
“You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.” ~2 Corinthians 9:11-12
From the beginning of time, God has commanded His people to be generous to those in need. In the law of Moses, He instilled financial relief every seven years, called the Sabbatical Year, where debts were cancelled. He even said, if a fellow Israelite needs help in say, year 4, don't even think that "he only has three more years to wait". God said, "Don't have any bad thoughts about someone in need - just help them". Deuteronomy 15:15 "Remember, you were slaves in Egypt. And the LORD your God set you free. So that is why I am giving you this command today."
Like all things in the Old Testament, I believe these instructions point directly to the mission of Jesus Christ. Mankind was in need. Jesus didn't say, "I'm not going to the cross for that one" - the Bible teaches that Jesus was the Lamb of God Who came to take away the sins of the world (John 1:29). Mankind was 'hungry' and He said, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my body that I will give is for the life of the world. " ~John 6:51
There are so many opportunities to help those less fortunate - we can't help everyone but if everyone helps someone, God's wishes will be fulfilled and we will be a reflection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Be that light - let it shine - don’t hide it - don’t let anyone blow it out. Let people see Jesus when they look at you - authentically with no ulterior motive. This service brings about an overflowing of thankfulness, leading to a community praising God. Things change for the better - all that positive energy crowds out negativity and dissension. All because of Jesus.
