Music and Song

Psalm 95:2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.
Come before Him with Thanksgiving with music and song. Singing isn’t the only way to give honor and worship to God, but it is a very important way. Singing expresses human emotion. When I’m sad, I listen to music, and when I’m happy, I listen to music. But there’s just something about singing joyfully that honors God above all else.
There’s a place for a somber, reflective mood in worship. I keep thinking about some of the songs our choir sings for Good Friday. But we always know that Sunday is coming! And worshiping God with thanksgiving is the best way that we can express gratitude to our God who has done so much for us.
This psalm was written by a priest or Levite calling God’s people into the temple to worship God. It is meant to remind the people of Israel of the security they have with Yahweh.
How many times do we go to church and are distracted by all the things going on in our lives during the week and our thoughts aren’t completely centered on God. We need to enter into God’s presence the same way these people did. Most churches follow the same routine week after week because it actually helps prepare us to focus on God.
The call to worship, the singing, expressions of joy and asking for prayers, giving of offerings, scripture and sermon. These are all ways to help us prepare our hearts for worship.
We all have a responsibility to praise God, because we are all His. So whether you are entering the doors of church, or starting your devotions each morning, start it with praise! If you can, start it with singing, or listening to music, even if you just hum along… I listen to Christian praise and worship music the whole time I’m getting ready in the morning. It just fills me with such joy and gratitude that I can’t help but feel good by the time I come into my office.
Give it a try. Start your morning with thanksgiving with music and song, and see how much better your day goes!
