“My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me." ~John 10:27-28

“My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of My hand.” ~John 10:27-28

In the ancient Middle East, everyone’s sheep were kept in a single corral in town. Every morning, the shepherds would come and call out their sheep to take them to pasture. How could they do that? Have you ever watched a sheep-herding challenge for non-shepherds? It is the funniest thing in the world - total chaos. Sheep everywhere. Yelling. Chasing. Running. Failure.

But real shepherds have a certain call or whistle that is unique. The sheep recognize that voice and follow without exception. Those who heard this passage would know that - it was part of their daily lives. Wouldn’t they feel loved? Protected? Cherished?

This applies to us as well, 2000 plus years later. The Lord is our Shepherd and there is nothing that we need apart from Him. He is our banquet - our salvation and bread from heaven. He is our Light and our Life - our Living Water.

“I have come that they may have life” ~John 10:10. Verse 16 says, “And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice. So there will be one flock, one Shepherd.”

Surely, we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
