My Spirit Has Rejoiced
"And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior" ~Luke 1:47
This verse is part of Mary's praise of God in what is called, the Magnificat. She is overwhelmed with joy and humble gratitude for the gift bestowed on her - the gift for all mankind, promised since the day of Adam and Eve. Can you imagine how she felt? Every Jew had longed for the Messiah, the Chosen One. Waiting. Every girl must have dreamed of bearing the Redeemer. Waiting. Yet, there is no indication that Mary questioned God's messenger - she accepted this promise with gracious humility. After seeing her cousin Elizabeth, her joy compounded.
"Mary said: "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. Because He looked upon the lowly state of His maidservant; for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. For He that is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has overthrown the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty. He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy, As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever."
The words to, "Mary did you know?" touch me every time I hear this poignant song - especially this last verse:
Mary, did you know
That your Baby Boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know
That your Baby Boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know
That your Baby Boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
The sleeping Child you're holding is the Great, I Am.
