Praise with Song
"I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving." ~Psalm 69:30
Music is magical - it connects creation in a way that nothing else can. I love the videos you see of doggies dancing, birds bouncing and even elephants drumming and swaying. Music heals and energizes and calms. It can stir emotion. When my daughter was a baby/toddler, there was a point in the church service when she would start crying. We realized that it was the same time each Sunday - when the coral response switched to a minor key. She eventually would say, "sad song" and whimper. Her empathy is both a curse and a blessing - she feels so deeply.
I often wondered if music spoke to David the same way? If you read this entire Psalm, you may think you pulled up the wrong one - it starts out with David having a major pity party - then a rage against his enemies. But it suddenly shifts to joy and thanksgiving with this verse. David finishes out the Psalm with words of praise and adoration, "Praise Him, heaven and earth! Sea and everything in it, praise Him!"
This speaks to me - no matter how cranky or angry we are, God can turn us on a dime. The birds, crickets, frogs, whales praise Him - and so should we. The best part is that God will motivate us to do so. He puts that song in our hearts - let us magnify the Lord together!
