Restore to Me
Create in me a clean heart, O God
And renew a right spirit within me
Cast me not away from Thy presence, O Lord
And take not Thy Holy Spirit from me
Restore unto me, the joy of Thy salvation
And renew a right spirit within me
~Psalm 51:10-12
Keith Green used this Psalm for his most recognizable songs - any time I read them, my mind starts singing. I remember when I first realized that David wrote this after his Bathsheba incident - I was upset that I loved this song so much. But then...THEN I saw the beauty in his shame and repentance. It wasn't until after I had children that I caught a glimpse of what God might feel when His lost sheep come back to the fold. To have a child crawl into your lap and say, "I'm sorry, Mama", ah, such sweetness.
God is a god of second chances...no...third, fourth....infinity chances. He ALWAYS forgives and restores. Yes, we may suffer consequences for our actions, but our slate is washed clean in God's eyes. Jesus did that. For us. Even for the humans who nailed Him to a cross.
In four days we celebrate His entrance into this world - God becoming man - THE Man - a not-so-silent night that called for an uncountable number of angels to fill the sky, praising God, proclaiming the "good news for all men".
Father, restore unto us the joy of Your salvation! Renew our spirits - especially the spirit of forgiveness and love! Amen
And renew a right spirit within me
Cast me not away from Thy presence, O Lord
And take not Thy Holy Spirit from me
Restore unto me, the joy of Thy salvation
And renew a right spirit within me
