Serve in Love

image of the word "freedom" written in the sand of a beach with the caption "You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13"

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” ~Galatians 5:13

We live in a world of self-indulgence, don’t we? Everything is geared towards pleasing ourselves. Taking care of me. Yes, it’s important…to some extent, but I think you’ll find that when helping others, your own problems seem to diminish, if not disappear. Perhaps it makes you appreciate what you DO have. Maybe God transforms your thinking and allows you to focus on someone other than yourself and then you feel fulfilled. Astonishing.

Paul is reminding the Galatians (and us) that even though their (our) sins are forgiven, we are accountable to live as Christ taught - with love by the power of the Holy Spirit. The bad news is that we cannot hide our thoughts and actions from God. The good news is ALSO that we cannot hide our thoughts and actions from God. How does that work? Wouldn’t you rather have the most merciful and gracious One be your judge?

Way way back in the time of King David, he disobeyed and God asked him, “Would you rather I issue the consequences or your enemy?” David wisely chose God saying, "This is a terrible situation to be in. But it would be better to be punished by the LORD than by anyone else, because He is very merciful." ~2 Samuel 24:14

Father, remove the desire to put ourselves first and motivate us to live as Christ taught us. Fuel us with Your Spirit, give us loving hearts to serve those around us, let us use our freedom for Your glory. Amen

Have a blessed day!
