Serve One Another Humbly in Love

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” ~Galatians 5:13

Today we celebrate love. Call it a Hallmark Holiday if you want, but it is here to stay. Love is free! Love is kind. Love doesn’t relish the ruin of others. Love doesn’t boast or hate or hold grudges. Valentine’s Day can be all about God’s love. “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” ~ 1 Corinthians 13:13

This section of Galatians is talking about the freedom we have in Christ. Christians were being persecuted by Rome and the Jewish converts were tempted to return to the old law to avoid persecution. The Jewish leaders had an understanding with Rome (the mixture of iron and clay that Daniel predicted hundreds of years before), and were protected, as long as they paid tribute and tax to Caesar. Paul is imploring the Christians to stay strong in their faith in Christ. This freedom does not mean to return to the law.

The whole law is wrapped up in one command, to love your neighbor as yourself (Galatians 5:14: “Love already completes the law; this is the nitty-gritty of the law; to value your fellow human as equal to yourself.” Jesus was the most superior example of this - He is our Valentine, for there is no greater love than to lay one's life down for others. This is the greatest love story ever told and it’s written on our hearts. A covenant of love instead of a covenant of law.

Father, thank you for loving us.

Have a blessed day!
