Since God So Loved

“Dear Friends, since God so loved us, we ought to love one another.” ~1 John 4:11

‘Ought'….strange word. We use it willy-nilly :“I ought to call my aunt”, “you ought to apply for that job”. It’s almost our way of making a checklist. A mental reminder. But in a time long long ago, ‘ought’ was an obligation, a legal debt. That changes this verse from a gentle suggestion to a command. But a tender one. One that the Holy Spirit uses to bring harmony and unity to the community of faith.

The Spirit has truly changed my heart on several occasions. One example was many many years ago; I had a co-worker that stepped on and twisted every nerve I had. Agh, the voice just seared through my brain. I could not stand to be anywhere near them. I recognized my un-Christlike behavior and asked God to fix me, to see them as He did. Suddenly, my whole attitude changed. I didn’t do it. God did it. No longer did that voice turn me upside-down. I still knew it was annoying, but it didn’t bother me and I felt sincere love for them.

How can we be a light for the world if we fight amongst ourselves? Christians are known more for their hatred than they are for their love. That is astonishingly sad, heart-breaking, really. Shame on us. We ought to love one another. We are OBLIGATED to love one another.

God, pour down Your love on us. Wash our eyes to see Your Majesty. Let YOUR love be a beacon hope to others thru us.

Have a blessed day!
