So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” ~John 8:36
Such a BIG little verse. It’s part of the passage where Jesus also says, “the truth will set you free” (John 8:32), which is so popular that it’s become part of our ‘daily dictionary of phrases’. I’ve heard it on crime shows, comedy routines and even on Survivor.
But the truth they are talking about is the truth that they want to hear - the truth that fits the situation. The only TRUE truth is….drum roll…..Jesus Christ, who said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
We struggle with truth. Teaching our kids when to keep our mouths shut. “Yes, Billy, we know he smells, but we don't have to say it out loud.” So, how does that makes us free?
Just yesterday, my friend and I were talking about how relationship trumps freedom. For example, I am free to eat meat on Fridays during lent. But when around my Catholic friends, I will go the pasta route. I am free to have a glass of wine, but if my friend feels that it’s a sin, I will forgo the Cabernet.
Freedom is all wrapped up in love. Being loving, compassionate, thoughtful and kind is more important than our own desires. That is true freedom.
“It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. So whatever you believe about these things, keep it between yourself and God.” ~Romans 14:21-22a
