So That Your House on the Rock Stays Firm

“As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.” ~Luke 6:47-48
These verses! The source for one of the most fun kiddo Sunday school songs. I loved singing this with my children and grandchildren complete with motions and voice changes.
The passage goes on in verse 49: “But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
The ground without foundation is sand. In the Bible, sand represents people - humankind - and Jesus is referred to as the Rock. If we put our trust in people and not Jesus, when the storms of life hit, as they always do, we have nothing to stand on. We drown. But reaching for Jesus, the sure foundation, we are rescued and secure.
In fact, the very center verse of the Bible is Psalm 118:8 “It is better to have faith in the Lord than to put one's hope in man.” God made that happen. And even more beautiful is the symmetry - it’s pure poetry - there are 1118 chapters are either side of this verse. That cannot be a coincidence. We are meant to pay attention to this.
Keep that song in the back of your mind - access it when needed so that your house on the Rock stays firm!
