Strengthened by Grace

“You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” ~2 Timothy 2:1

Usually when we think of strength, we picture someone muscular, tanned and oiled, eager to show their physical ability. Crossfit is so popular right now - I admire those who are disciplined to stick with it and build those layers of muscle. What the human body can accomplish is truly remarkable.

Even though Paul valued physicality, that is not the strength he is writing about here. “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” ~Corinthians 12:9; Philippians 4:13

Spiritual strength is a common theme throughout the letters from Paul. Here he is encouraging Timothy, whom he loves as if a son. Timothy is young and has the responsibility of leading the growing church. Paul fills his letters with instruction - one of my favorites is in verse 23: “have nothing to do with stupid and senseless controversies”.

We, too, can take Paul’s words to heart. If God wants us to do something, nothing can stop us. That power from Him is true strength - it’s a gift and that makes it grace - nothing we can earn or deserve. It’s AMAZING GRACE!
