The Entire Law
“For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” ~Galatians 5:14
The Golden Rule. I’ve heard it expanded to say, “Treat others how they expect to be treated”. That’s even harder, isn’t it? We know ourselves and what makes us happy, but that is not necessarily what others want. I realized this whole-heartedly this morning. I LOVE sitting outside early am, listening to the birds. My hubby lately has been joining me but his listening pleasure has been 70s rock. AGH! It seems so invasive to the quiet. ANY noise early in the day actually makes me twitch. BUT….I struggled to ignore. Boy, did I struggle. Occasionally a small groan escaped my lips. I started asking God to change my heart.
This is a silly example, but it also demonstrates how intimate our relationship is with God - He cares about all the dumb little details. He WANTS us to have internal and external peace, a subject near and dear to Paul’s heart as he wrote to the Galatians in an emotionally-charged passage - read the whole of chapter 5 and you’ll see what I mean.
The original Greek is even more graphic. Paul was MAD. The church was fighting within itself over doctrine…hmmm sound familiar? He said, “Cut it out or you will completely destroy yourselves” (Paul was a pun-master - you’ll see). That was 2000 years ago and we still are having issues in the extreme. Every side thinks they’re right and uses scripture to “prove” their point.
Love is the answer. God can smooth all the rough edges and allow differing opinions without argument. God loves us, even when we’re jerks. Jesus was love personified on the cross, “Forgive them Father” - with His help, we truly can love our neighbor.
Have a blessed day!
