The Greatest Commandment

In Matthew 22:36-39 a young man asked the Lord,  "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"  Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment.

Think about this for a minute. There is no way we can do this. Even the best of humanity cannot hold this standard for a whole day, let alone 24/7. Have you ever tried to be good? Like really tried? Things fall apart quickly. Our thoughts take on a life of their own - taming them is like trying to get 10 baby pandas in their pen [look up “cleaning baby panda pen”].

But this was all part of God’s plan. We are supposed to realize we cannot uphold the law. Keeping the Ten Commandments all the time? No way. Why would God do that? Only a perfect man could follow God’s commands. None of us is perfect. But Jesus was. Until Jesus came to earth, God gave humankind a way to atone for their sin. Then Jesus came - the once and for all atonement - the Lamb of God Who came to take away the sin of the world. ‘At-one-ment’ - Jesus makes a way for us to be one with Him. Astonishing! How can you not love Him? Funny thing….We can love Him ONLY because He loved us first. 1 John 4:19

“But now, at the end of the ages, He has appeared once for all to remove sin by His sacrifice.” ~Hebrews 9:26 “But He Himself, having offered one sacrifice for sins forever, He sat down at the right hand of God ~ Hebrews 10:12 "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” ~John 1:29
