The Lord Establishes Their Steps

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” ~Proverbs 16:9

To be honest about it, we all think we know best, don’t we? The Old Testament provides some great examples: Abraham trying to hurry along God’s promise of a son by conceiving via his wife’s servant, Hagar. Rahab, a prostitute - never a good plan. Jonah emphatically opposing God's command to preach to Ninevah.

But God says, “Nope - you are going to become a signpost for My Son. Hagar will show that it’s not only Israel that is part of my plan. Rahab, you will preserve Israel. Jonah, you will bring about the salvation of an entire heathen nation.”

God resides beyond time - everything is present to Him. He doesn't make things up as He goes. He doesn't have a Plan B.

"Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure" (Isa. 46: 9-10)

Some make take the Proverbs and Isaiah verses as if God was a puppet-master. But He sees the big picture - we only see a single frame at a time. It is so comforting to know that no matter how badly we mess up, He will redirect us into His perfect plan.

"The Lord does not delay concerning His promise, as some reckon slackness, but is long suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9
