“The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses His people with peace.”~Psalm 29:11
The theme of March has been ‘cultivating a quiet heart’, developing an internal peace that can only come from God. You may have noticed that many, if not most, of the verses this month have come from the book of Psalms.
It struck me that David, the author of a good portion of the book, had a life that was so very UNpeaceful. His childhood and teen years were spent out in the wild tending the flocks while being continually on guard against the predators, leading into a period of time in which he was the personal musician of the king - most definitely not a relaxing stint. Then comes the whole killing-Goliath-fan-favorite era causing the jealousy and murderous rage of King Saul. Fleeing for his life as a fugitive for 8-10 years. One thing I’m sure was constantly on his mind was the fact that as a youth, he had been anointed as king of Israel - when would this all come together?
Once David took the throne, 20 YEARS after being anointed, his life was full of war and violence. External chaos. But for much of his life, internal peace reigned. God was in his heart, on his mind and tongue. He was able to “record” these beautiful Psalms that bring comfort and peace to all whole meditate on them, even to this day.
If I am having a cranky day, I often read the Psalms. They calm and comfort, refocusing my attention to the One who matters. The One Who brings peace.
