The Right to Do Anything
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.” ~1 Corinthians 6:12
‘You are what you eat’…I always hated that phrase - especially after a holiday picnic. Who wants to be a hotdog with baked beans?? I’m allowed to eat that stuff, but is it good for me day after day? Remember the guy who ate only McDonalds for thirty days documented in the film, ‘Super Size Me'? He was controlled both physically and mentally by this ‘freedom of choice’ and by day 21 was warned to stop the nonsense by his doctor.
Corinth was a city drenched in sin. Paul is saying that, while Christ has lifted the strictures of Jewish law, he did not intend to excuse sinful behavior—behavior destructive both to the sinner and to the church. Some of the newbies were flaunting their freshly-found liberty and causing dissension among those less certain of those freedoms. Paul is trying to get them to see moderation and wisdom in their choices.
Paul ends this chapter with “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
“So then, if it is a question of food or drink, or any other thing, whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” ~1 Corinthians 10:31
Have a blessed day!
