The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me
“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners” ~Isaiah 61:1
This is a prophecy about Jesus. And 700+ years later, Jesus Himself, in the reading of the Scriptures in the Nazareth Synagogue, chose this passage to read. He ended by saying, “Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled.”
What could be more clear? He is saying, “I’m your Messiah”. The language of anointing always points to kingship and they would catch that immediately. But they are just like us and we like them. Hit us in the face with something and we selectively ignore what we don’t want to hear.
It makes me think of my pup. I can call and call and call him with the word ‘Come”, and he pointedly pretends he can’t hear. But change that word to “Do you wanna…” and look out! About knocking me over with all of his 17 pounds.
Jesus is always saying, “Come” but we find something else ‘more important’ to do. If we only knew….it would be grace upon grace, overflowing our cup.
Jesus, open our hearts and eyes and ears to experience You! Amen
Have a blessed day!
