The Truth Shall Make You Free

“Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My Word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” ~John 8:31-32

What’s a disciple? I think we tend to picture the twelve men that followed Jesus - Peter, James, John, etc. But a disciple in the ancient biblical world PHYSICALLY imitated both the life and teaching of the master. He had many disciples, women included. Sometimes I put myself in that time period and picture what it would have been like. Would I have welcomed Jesus into our home and sat at His feet as He taught? Would I have turned my back on family and traveled with Him? The Chosen series portrays this well, I think. Some come and go as they can, others have committed to the travel - men and women and family members.

This shows that discipleship comes in many forms - the common denominator is the word “continue”, which in Greek means to live, be, dwell, remain, stay. Each one of us has a unique way of living, reflecting our individual personalities. For example, my house is full of color and interesting shapes. My daughter's home is black, white and grey. She shudders at my “clutter”. But it is right for me. Her clean neutral lines are right for her.

When we are focused on Jesus, our personalities will shape our discipleship, which is individualized and right for each follower. I don’t think God wants cookie-cutter followers - He wants us as He designed us - there is freedom in that. Freedom in Jesus - HE is the truth that sets us free. Freedom from sin and a fallen world. The best is yet to come!

Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” ~John 14:6a
