These Words of Mine

"Imprint these words of mine on your hearts and minds, bind them as a sign on your hands, and let them be a symbol on your foreheads." Deuteronomy 11:18
"Imprint these words of mine on your hearts and minds, bind them as a sign on your hands, and let them be a symbol on your foreheads." Deuteronomy 11:18

Moses wrote these words given by God around 1400 BC

About 1400 years later, the Pharisees literally did this - they wore scripture from the Torah (the first 5 books of the Bible) in little leather boxes called phylacteries tied on their forehead and left arm.  The rules and regulations concerning this practice was 'miles long' and did not come from the Lord.  Concocted by man and a good example of the bondage of the law.  Adult Jews still wear phylacteries during their weekday prayers.

But it wasn't meant to be taken literally. I believe it was a signpost to Jesus. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ." 1 Corinthians 2:16.  That is where the scripture should be kept - in our mind and hidden in our heart so that we will not sin (Psalm 119). Our hands and feet are used to serve the Lord, spreading His good news and helping others.  Paul even quoted the prophet Isaiah in the book of Romans, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”  And in Galatians, he speaks of our hands "Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law."

The law of Christ is not a list of tedious ordinances, a struggle to keep.  The law of Christ is love and forgiveness.  The work of Christ on the Cross completed that old law and His resurrection brought in the new.   The apostle John writes: "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."  Jesus radiated with grace and truth and so can we.  So MUST we.  The world needs Jesus - the more we know of Him, the more we THINK like Him and nothing will muffle the good news!
