They Will Be Blessed in What They Do
“But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” ~James 1:25
Have you ever audited a class? Most colleges will allow you to freely sit and listen to a class - no grades, no coursework, no cost, but no credit, either. My classes were homework-heavy and I was so jealous of those who audited. They gained all the knowledge without the effort. Thousand-word paper on the ATP cycle due by midnight? No worries for them. Model to scale of E.Coli? Nope, headed to a party.
In this verse, the Greek word for hearing is related to our word for auditing. It took me back to college days - made me realize that those who audited my classes most likely forgot everything I was grinding out into the wee hours of the morning. I did the work and was blessed with enough credits to have a career.
James is saying the same thing. We can’t read minds, so we have no idea how much scripture is stored in someone’s heart, or how many prayers were given or how many hours were spent in God’s presence. We can only see what others do. Our faith is shown in our actions. The title of hypocrite should never have the chance to be attached to our name. Ah, I can’t think of a worse insult. That would dig deeply.
Lord, show us how to demonstrate our faith and give us opportunities to BE Your word, to show that You are true freedom. You are the perfect law. Amen.
Have a blessed day!
