This is the Way
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” ~Isaiah 30:21
Scholars believe that this chapter most likely refers to the summer of 714 B.C. Israel was asking Egypt for aid against Assyria and Isaiah was blasting them, denouncing this reliance on heathen nations rather than on God. It was one of those things that was a strict no-no for Israel.
But this particular verse can speak to many different time periods - the rebellious Israelites in the 8th century BC, or as a prophecy of the coming Savior and Holy Spirit and even for us in the 21rst century. We don’t have to be a prophet to hear the voice of God. He speaks to us through the Holy Spirit, a gentle guiding, prodding and pushing. Doors close and windows open. Opportunities “magically” present themselves. When we are keen to hear His direction, it often becomes crystal-clear and we wonder why we don’t trust God with every decision.
I think this translation is comforting: 'If you wander from the right path, either to the right or to the left, you will hear a voice behind you saying, "You should go this way. Here is the right way." It fits hand-in-glove with my favorite verse of all time: “Trust the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths ~Proverbs 3:5-6
Father, we know you are there, an ever-present help, anxiously waiting for us to rely on You, but we have short memories and forget this far too often. Nudge us off our ‘me’ pedestal and remind us of Your guiding presence. Amen!
