Transform, Renew, Approve
When I’m looking at a verse, I usually compare translations. Often the differences help make sense of what we’re used to hearing. Like this one:
Romans 12:2 in the English Standard Version
(ESV) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
\~\~\~\~~~
(BBE) And let not your behaviour be like that of this world, but be changed and made new in mind, so that by experience you may have knowledge of the good and pleasing and complete purpose of God.
(CEV) Don't be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think. Then you will know how to do everything that is good and pleasing to him.
(ISV) Do not be conformed to this world, but continually be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you may be able to determine what God's will is—what is proper, pleasing, and perfect.
(EMTV) And do not fashion yourselves after this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and well pleasing and perfect will of God.
I like these translations better - especially the CEV, which makes it clear that God does the transforming, renewing and approving. Look at the ISV - it’s a continual process - that is comforting to know it’s not one-and-done. God ALWAYS has your back - you may feel abandoned but YOU ARE NEVER ALONE. He will carry you through the dark times and help you when you’re ready to stand again. He will take the desires of the world away and refocus your mind on what is good. This constant renewing makes room for those failures that we are ashamed of, but can’t seem to help. He KNOWS what we’re like, loves us anyway and gives us the tools we need to improve.
1John 3:1a “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.“
