Treasured Your Word
“I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you.” ~Psalm 119:11
I’ve always loved this verse. It shows there is a way to keep sinful me in check. I learned it as “I have hidden Your words in my heart…”. Other translations use the word “stored in my heart”. All poetic ways of saying “memorize, memorize, memorize”.
My grandmother has a phenomenal memory - playing Trivial Pursuit with her was a gaming death sentence. I remember a question, “What is a runcible spoon?” Well, she straightened up in her seat and recited the whole “Owl and the Pussycat” poem by Edward Lear. I still have her handwritten story of “Epaminondas” that she recalled from third grade! Third grade?? She was able to pull from her memory when she needed it.
I believe that’s what the Psalmist is speaking of here. No one had the written word at that time. They couldn’t check their Bible for scripture. No lists of verses to help when scared or anxious or depressed. The only place to access God’s word was in their heart. Scholars believe that this Psalm was written on the slavery march from Jerusalem to Babylon in 586 BC. Never had they needed to hear God’s voice more! Those that had His word memorized were able to write the beautiful heart-felt phrases of Psalm 119. It gave them life and the ability to forgive their captors. Seems impossible, no? Check out Daniel and his friends, shining examples of what the Word can do. The actual Word is Jesus Christ. How much more can He transform your life! He is already hidden in your heart - let Him shine!
