What We Have Seen and Heard
When we see or hear something extraordinary, we want to tell everyone! I’m guessing that is one reason why social media is so popular (although the world’s definition of ‘extraordinary’ has certainly changed - ‘look at my breakfast’…)
I remember when camcorders first were available; it was so exciting to make a video of an event. One night, we had a camp fire at youth group and we starting wishing that Jesus had one. Wouldn’t that have been incredible?? The Bible recorded ‘live’! But the world relied on what is called ‘the oral tradition’ - stories passed down from one generation to the next, verbatim. Not a single word was allowed to be altered or you and your family were shamed for a lifetime for not keeping a pristine record. That was how history was preserved…that is, until the written word became widespread. It has gotten to the point nowadays that you cannot trust what is said or photographed. Even videos are altered and contaminated.
Jesus' disciples didn’t have an easy time - Peter and John were arrested and questioned but no charge could be placed against them. They were warned to keep quiet and they responded, "You yourselves judge which is right in God's sight—to obey you or to obey God. For we cannot stop speaking of what we ourselves have seen and heard." ~Acts 4:19-20
Jesus transforms lives. How can we keep quiet? Why are we reluctant to speak of Him? If we really understood what He has done for us, nothing would stop us, for it is TRULY extraordinary.
Have a blessed day!
