Whatever One Sows

“Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.“ ~Gal 6:7

Even though we may deny it, I suspect that we all enjoy seeing the bad guy get his due. ‘Karma’, as current culture calls it. One that gives me great satisfaction is when two lanes of traffic are merging into one - everyone is following the signage except those few who go speeding up the berm and sneak in at the bottleneck. Ah, my blood boils. I cheer when an 18-wheeler spans the lanes so no one can pass. Childish? Yes. Christ-like? No.

This verse gets me every time. God uses it to check my thoughts and intentions. I used it when raising my kids. We can’t hide from God - we may fool those around us with our good works and charitable donations. Social media is a great vehicle for this facade. Only God knows our hearts and when our intentions are pure, the good is exponentiated, like good seed.

“And these are they who are sown upon the good ground, who hear the word, and receive it, and yield fruit, the one thirty, another sixty, and another a hundred.” ~Mark 4:20

But when we are motivated by sin, even if we pretty up the outside, we will suffer the consequences. It’s between us and God. No one else has a right to judge because we are all in the same boat. We reap what we sow and there is no hiding or pretending. That sounds scary. Sometimes we can’t help what we think - the thoughts just pop up. But scripture also tells us that the Holy Spirit is there to guide our thoughts and fill our hearts with love. That overtakes any evil intention. Jesus said, “Whatever you ask in My name, this I will do.” ~John 14:13 The best part is that He never ever gets tired of helping us!
