Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” ~Colossians 3:23-24
I had a friend who absolutely HATED to iron her husband's shirts. She told me she’d curse him the whole time (which seemed highly unlikely - she was the sweetest most 'Christian-like' women I knew. She laughed when I told her that and said, “Proves that I can easily hide my sins”).
We were studying the book of Colossians together and as she read this verse out loud, she fell silent. She looked at me with a hint of tears in her eyes and said, “I have to iron for Jesus”. I knew exactly what she was getting at and thought of all the chores I grumbled through on a daily basis.
Wince. “I’m so sorry, Jesus. I’d do anything for You if You were here, wouldn’t I? I’d be honored to wash Your clothes, cook Your meals, run errands for You. It’s different when it’s my family. They don’t always appreciate anything I do.”
I’m pretty sure He would reply with something like Matthew 25:40, "Whenever you did it for any of My people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for Me." Yep, that smarts.
God, please remind us of this when we start to complain. Put Jesus in our mind so that our attitude changes. Fill our heart with gladness instead of grumpiness and replace the notion of ‘HAVING to do something’ with a new perspective of “I GET to do this!” as if we're doing it for You. Amen!
