When I was your foe, still Your love fought for me

My daughter sent me this post by IG mrdavebutler and I thought is was so appropriate for this week. He starts off by stating:

“No one ever says this on the Fourth of July: I didn’t earn this. I don’t think I deserve to celebrate.”

No one stands under the fireworks and wonders if they are worthy of the show. They don’t skip the BBQ because they didn’t fight or sacrifice or give all they had. They don’t question if they deserve it. They just celebrate it with a hand over a grateful heart. They don’t think about what they haven’t done. They thank those who did.

This is how grace works. It’s the good news of the gospel. So maybe no one should say those same things at church. Maybe they should stop [wondering] if they deserve it - or did enough to earn it - or are worthy of the gift. Maybe they [should] stop thinking about what they haven’t done and remember what He has [accomplished] and just celebrate it. And live in the wonder of it. And walk in on Sunday morning with a sparkler in hand. Because who the Son sets free is free indeed.”

What a great analogy. It’s all about Christ and what He has done. He is already victorious. He gives us the ability to fight against invisible enemies that attack our minds and bodies that try to distract us from Him.

It reminds me of a song by Cory Ashbury - “Reckless Love”

When I was your foe, still Your love fought for me
You have been so, so good to me
When I felt no worth, You paid it all for me
You have been so, so kind to me

And oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God
Oh, it chases me down, fights 'til I'm found, leaves the ninety-nine
I couldn't earn it, and I don't deserve it, still, You give Yourself away
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God.

Thank you, Jesus!
