While we were still sinners, Christ died for us
But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” ~Romans 5:8
I love this chapter of Romans - Jesus Christ is the star of the show. Everything is because of Him and His faithfulness to THE PLAN, which was set in stone before “the foundation of the world”.
We as humans think chronologically - time marches in step one foot after the other. But time is part of God’s creation. We use it to sort things out, to keep track of events, to watch ourselves age, but in the grand scheme of things, we sense that time is fluid. For instance, take ten minutes with your favorite person versus ten minutes with the dentist. I’m pretty sure the latter is hours long. “Time flies when you’re having fun” is no joke.
That fits right into this verse from Romans - even though we see the event of the Cross set at 33 AD, it was already accomplished before the creation of time. God loved YOU before the sun, moon and stars were set in the sky. An old hymn pops into my thoughts:
“Oh, how He loves you and me, Oh how He loves you and me. He gave his life, what more could he give? Oh, how He loves you; Oh, how he loves me; Oh, how he loves you and me.”
Ephesians 1:4 “In Christ, He chose us before the world was made. He chose us in love to be His holy people—people who could stand before Him without any fault.”
That is simply astonishing. There should be a song that is titled, “Oh how we take Him for granted”.
Father, let us understand in a deeper way how much You love us. Enable us to spread that love to those around us - to reflect Jesus in our words and actions. Create in us clean hearts, oh Lord. Amen
