Whoever Claims to Love God Yet Hates a Brother or Sister is a Liar
“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.” ~1 John 4:20
We all get in arguments with our family - that’s natural and normal. But when it goes too far, it becomes an idol that replaces our relationship with God. Imagine a funeral of a parent of several grown children. One comes from out of state with an empty U-Haul to fill. The others who live closer and who have taken care of the parent are grieving and cannot believe their sibling would act in such a way, It causes a rift and a decade-long feud ensues.
At the workplace, church, or in the community, the same problems arise. Our brothers and sisters extend beyond the familial unit. Grudges destroy what is precious to God. He is the source of love, so anything that creates an obstacle in that continuous flow is in opposition to Him.
It takes humility and the Holy Spirit to smooth these sharp edges. It’s so easy to respond in anger. But if I keep this verse in mind, it helps to swallow words that can never be taken back. ‘Let go and let God’ and allow His Spirit to continually pour His love into my heart. ~Romans 5:5
“The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” ~Exodus 14:14
