You are No Longer Foreigners and Strangers, But Fellow Citizens
“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief cornerstone.” ~Ephesians 2:19-20
Ah, this passage is sooo loaded. Sometimes I like to read a verse several times out loud emphasizing different words each time. It is amazing how the intent is fluid and the meaning morphs…in a good way.
These words popped and together, they form a reality in Jesus. Read them separately. Then string them together as one. That unity is you and me.
Fellow Citizens, God’s people, Members, Household, Built, Foundation, Christ Jesus, Chief Cornerstone.
The purpose of a cornerstone is to align two walls together in correct position. Remove the chief cornerstone and the structure collapses. It’s not a stretch to realize why Paul uses that word to describe Jesus Christ. In fact, in centuries previous, the ancients Job, Isaiah, Jeremiah and David wrote about the Cornerstone Who is the coming Messiah.
And what do the two walls symbolize? Jews and Gentiles? That is a logical conclusion based on Paul’s writings. But what if God’s plan is even bigger? What is Paul was just getting their toes wet? What if it is beyond our imaginings? Wouldn’t that be just like God?
Father, don’t let us put You in a box. We have tried but You are not to be restrained or contained. Pull us out of a stale rut and open our eyes and ears to notice what You are doing. As a unified family, turn our focus from ourselves to look to You, The Author and Perfector of our faith. Let us truly be one as You have designed, Amen.
Have a blessed day!
