Psalm 30:4 - Sing praise to the Lord, you saints of His, And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name.

We’re backing up a couple of chapters before yesterday’s Psalm into Chapter 30. David is again praising God for His forgiveness and mercy. He is calling on the people of Israel to sing praises to the Lord and give thanks. He wants everyone to join him in praising and thanking God!

I have question for you. What is your favorite type of worship music?  For me, I love listening to contemporary Christian music. Sometimes I’m in the mood for something slow and meaningful and other times I love a good rock beat! My favorite groups are Casting Crowns, Mercy Me and For King and Country.

Some people prefer to listen to instrumental music instead of songs with lyrics, and that’s totally fine, I occasionally enjoy it too. I love to hear piano music, and the violin, and even a good guitar melody.  But I believe that the most beautiful sound of all are the voices of God’s people.

God isn’t against musical instruments! Not at all! He loves the sound of a string instrument, or a horn or drum. In fact many of the Psalms were written to be accompanied by stringed instruments and the tambourine, harp and trumpet.

But only one instrument sings. Only a human voice can sing words of praise. Only a human voice can express words of God’s power, goodness and mercy.  And believe me, we all need the voice that announces the Good News of Jesus Christ!

For some people, singing just doesn’t come naturally, and some admit that they just can’t sing very well, but God still tells us to sing! God has told us that one way He wants to be worshiped is through singing! What makes a song beautiful is when it’s offered in praise to God. Singing that truly honors God isn’t just about singing. It’s about worshiping Him.
